Middle Archaic - 4800 BC

On the last day of planned excavations, a deep Middle Archaic occupation was discovered in the southwest corner of the block. It occurred at a depth of 6.0 m (19.7 ft) below the present ground surface. At this time the land was lower in elevation relative to the Ohio River and was subject to high energy flooding. Flood scouring created a rolling terrain of swales and knolls. The Middle Archaic occupation occurred on one of the knolls.

The excavation block was expanded so that the deep occupation could be fully examined. It likely represented a single visit to the site; only 150 artifacts and 3 features were found.

This corner-notched point was one of the artifacts found in the deep component.

The features at this depth were only slightly darker than the surrounding soil and boundaries were difficult to define.
