Worker Safety

Excavation to depths of over 19 ft below the ground surface required an intense focus on worker safety. The excavations in Area 2 of Leetsdale complied with the strict requirements of the US Army Corps of Engineers' health and safety regulations.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as hard hats and steel-toed boots, was required for workers and visitors at all times.

The excavation plan was certified by a Professional Engineer and involved the use of OSHA-compliant safety benches to protect workers from collapse of the earthen walls.

The site was fenced to protect people and animals from dangers associated with the deep excavation. Inside the fence, caution tape was placed around the excavation to remind workers to stay away from the edge of the pit.
