Transitional Period - 1000 BC

The late Transitional Period occupations were found up to 1.6 m (5 feet) below the modern ground surface. Over 19,000 artifacts, including ceramics, were recovered. At this period in prehistory, the site area was a high terrace that sloped gently downward towards the Ohio River to east.

A large number of tools were found, fashioned from a variety of stone materials. Some of the tools still have surfaces of the stream cobbles from which they were made.
Six large roasting pits were identified, along with 24 other features such as fire pits and refuse pits. Note the reddened soil and charcoal in the base of the roasting pit. The rock was placed over the coals to radiate heat
