The Effects of Weather

The project schedule required archaeologists to work the year round under a variety of conditions.

The Area 2 project began in late August of 2002 with the clearing of brush in the excavation area. Because of the lack of rain, soils were dry and difficult to push through screens. And there was no shade.

The excavations continued into November and temperatures decreased. The small shelters in the foreground could be moved around the excavation area to protect the archaeologists who were digging. Screening of soil took place in the large shelter in the rear.

By late January, the cold and snow made it impossible to work. The project shut down and was restarted in April of 2003.

Excavation of the Middle Archaic component occurred in the Spring of 2003, a period of unusually frequent rainfall. The excavation area was too large to protect with a shelter. Instead, pumps were used to remove water after each rain. Work on the component was completed on June 2 and the excavation was backfilled.
